Regular dental visits allow us to monitor your oral health and look out for signs of any developing problems. We routinely screen our patients for mouth cancer, which takes less than two minutes and is included as part of your routine dental appointment.
Root canal therapy is indicated when your tooth’s pulp is infected, usually due to damage to the tooth or tooth decay. The treatment involves removing the infected tissue from inside the tooth, thoroughly cleaning and sterilising it to ensure no infection remains, and then filling the space to seal and protect it from further infection.
Historically, patients have been wary of root canals as they had a reputation for being painful. Rest assured that today’s root canal treatment is no more painful than having a simple filling. Some patients may feel a slight sensitivity for a few days afterwards, but this can be relieved with over-the counter-medication, and our dentists will be on hand to advise accordingly.
Following a root canal, we will often advise on the placement of a crown to reinforce the affected tooth. This is because, once the root has died and there is no more blood supply to the tooth, it will become more brittle and prone to cracking or breaking.
Most commonly, extractions involve wisdom teeth, which appear during late adolescence and are notorious for causing problems. Some wisdom teeth do not erupt properly or become impacted and in these cases it is better to have them removed.
Other teeth may need to be extracted if they are badly decayed and cannot be saved with other procedures, or because they are endangering the health of an adjacent tooth.
Once the extraction site has healed, we will be happy to discuss your options for replacing the missing tooth if appropriate.
We’re pleased to be able to provide an alternative to traditional X-rays, with our digital scanner. Oral scanning offers patients several advantages, including much lower doses of radiation, higher quality images and a much faster and efficient procedure. For the practice it not only speeds up our process and improves our diagnostic capabilities, but it’s also more environmentally friendly.
